Workshop by Daily Dump

“The moment you put your hands into the soil, you immediately connect to all your ancestors” Peter Vaernet.

Today we had a wonderful session by Ms Moonstar, who came from Daily Dump, an organization which works for training people to manage the home garbage. She initiated the students to the amazing world of how to create their own kitchen gardens. She took five sessions with the students of Class V to VIII and parents of class Nur, Prep and I. She began the session by introducing to them the history of kitchen gardens, as they are there since the times of Hanging gardens of Babylon to the Chahar Bagh of the Mughals to the latest of the Terrace gardens of the Metros across the world. She also shared about the history of home grown food. Basically the message to take home was that we should try not to throw away garbage since we are a culture which always believed in sustainable development and no wastage. She made them understand that its high time chemical fertilizers should be replaced with organic home made compost manure.

She also introduced various concepts of Guerrilla Gardening community farming; terrace gardens etc. She told them that they have to be creative in growing their food at home since it can be grown in any form of soil, it can be huge banana or chikoo trees in tar coal tins or lotus or lilies in bath tubs or cabbage or cauliflower in ordinary tubs or Mc Donald take away coke glasses or cracked coffee mugs or bowls or just simple polybags or water bottles etc no end to our imagination, but it is high time we start growing our own fruits and vegetables. All the groups went home with a very important message.
